Timber framing with Maine roots
Heritage Timber Wrights is a crew of hands-on builders creating enduring structures with local materials and timeless methods.
We’ve been building timber frames across Maine since 2016—with an eye for detail, a respect for materials, and pride in our process.
Who we are
Heritage Timber Wrights is a team of artistic, hands-on builders based in Midcoast Maine. Founded in 2016 by Michael Bunker and Bob LeRoy, the company grew out of years of experience in traditional timber framing and a deep respect for the craft.
We design and build timberframe homes, barns, and custom woodwork that combine structural integrity, aesthetic beauty, and low environmental impact. From compact cabins to large-scale barns and custom homes, our projects blend time-honored joinery with modern performance principles.
Led by Michael—who brings decades of experience in green building and energy efficiency—our crew brings specialized skills, attention to detail, and pride in every project. Whether restoring a historic frame or designing something new, we approach each build with care, creativity, and craftsmanship.
We work with clients who care not just about how a space looks—but how it’s made, what it’s made from, and the story it tells.
Our approach
-
Craftsmanship with Character
We build with traditional joinery, hand-cut details, and timeless techniques—never shortcuts. Every peg, brace, and beam tells a story.
-
Creativity Meets Practicality
We bring bold ideas to life in practical, functional ways—balancing vision with real-world performance and long-term durability.
-
Community-focused
We believe in collaboration—within our team, with clients, and with our local suppliers. Most of our work comes through word of mouth, and we’re proud of the lasting relationships we’ve built.
Our commitment to sustainability
At Heritage Timber Wrights, sustainability isn’t a trend—it’s a responsibility. We build with a long view in mind, choosing local materials, time-tested techniques, and low-impact methods that support both the land and the communities we live in.
Here’s what that looks like in practice
-
Local & Thoughtful Materials
We prioritize local timbers—often harvested just down the road—and primarily work with native species like white pine, hemlock, and cherry. Sourcing nearby supports the local economy, reduces the carbon footprint of our frames, and avoids reliance on exotic or high-impact materials. When other species are needed structurally, we choose them with care.
-
Healthier Insulation
We use Timber HP wood fiber insulation—a renewable, high-performance alternative to petroleum-based foam. It improves comfort, supports healthier indoor air, and significantly reduces carbon footprint compared to conventional materials.
-
Efficient, Low-Waste Design
Our timber framing uses less lumber than conventional methods like SIPs or stick framing—and it lasts for generations. We design with precision to minimize waste, reduce environmental impact, and build smarter from the start.
-
Energy-Conscious Builds
With roots in energy efficiency, we design homes that perform from day one—taking solar orientation, insulation strategy, and airtightness into account from the start.
“A building’s story starts with its materials. We aim to make that story one of care, integrity, and sustainability.”
